The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald
    Chapter 3: pages 39-59

    Summary:

The chapter kicks off when the reader is informed that Gatsby invites Nick to one of his apparently famous parties. When Nick goes, it seems like he sees nothing but a luxurious and extravagant lifestyle lived out by Gatsby. Nick finds Jordan Baker amongst the crowd. As both Nick and Jordan shuffle around in the party, Nick stumbles across a man named Jay Gatsby (the host), whom Nick later finds out had served with him in the army. Nick later tells the reader how it is important to not suspect him as a kind of a party kid; they are something of the occasion for him. He starts to talk about his life outside of his occasional parties such as taking long walks in the park and his bond business in New York City. Towards the end of the chapter, Tom starts to take an interest into Jordan Baker.

    Character: Jordan Baker

Jordan Baker is extremely significant because she makes the reader want to believe that she is the richest (In the physical, social, and emotional aspects) woman in the novel to this point. She also makes the reader believe that she truly loves Nick. “I was still with Jordan Baker” (Fitzgerald 47). Besides escaping loneliness, Nick stays with Jordan at the party because he feels like he can relate as well as spend some time with her. When Jordan Baker says when discussing careless drivers, she remarks, “I hate careless people. That’s why I like you” (Fitzgerald 58). This is the first time in the novel where we hear of actual physical attractiveness from Jordan to Nick.

    Meaningful Quote:

“I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known” (Fitzgerald 59).

I found this quote meaningful because of the way it pertains to my life. I find that I almost always am honest with others, and completely honest with myself. I know that if I am not honest with myself as well as the work that I put here into SI, then I am simply just cheating myself. Just as Nick would say it, I feel like I am surrounded by a world of dishonest people, and I feel like just zoning myself out because I am one of the few to be completely honest with myself.
